Blender Cycles: OpenCL now is on par with CUDA

Cycles has a split OpenCL kernel since Blender release 2.75. It's an alternative approach to what is used on CPU (so called megakernel). 
The idea behind splitting the kernel is to have multiple smaller kernels which are not only simpler and faster to compile, but also have better performance. 
Initial split kernel patch was done by AMD. Further work was also funded by AMD. 
The OpenCL Split Kernel now supports nearly all features. Only Correlated multi jitter is missing. 
Baking works, but uses the mega kernel. Volumetrics, SSS, Branched path tracing, HDR lightning and Denoising are fully supported. 
With current drivers, all production files from the official cycles benchmark pack, including the huge one from Gooseberry, render now pretty fast.

There is a file with the result of the tutorial at the end of part 2. but you should do it yourself really :)
Before doing part 3, I would like some feedback from beginners to improve it, and suggestions for the direction to take, should it be sparks, smoke, heat distortion, candle flame, fire camp, just say me ...
You can also suggest unrelated stuff so I can start to think about it (here or in the articles comments)

Tutorial on PBR Texture Creation Workflow in Blender

This is an experimental PBR texture creation workflow I am developing for advance texturing in Blender which can be cross platform in game engines and also in VFX environment.

By popular demand, I've made a video tutorial version of a text tutorial I had on my blog. In just 60 seconds, I show you a simple way to improve your plastic materials. We'll use a fresnel node to change the glossiness of our material, based on the angle, giving a nice result.

150 free Cycles shaders / Blende3D

Hey everyone!
To help improving your daily work in Blender and Cycles I've decided to share some stuff again. This time it's 150 free, texture based Cycles shaders that can be downloaded from chocofur.com after registering and logging in to your account.

From various wooden shaders to marble tiles, rusty steel or patterned fabric, I hope you'll be happy with our work! Each shader includes 4096 and 2048 px seamless texture. We've used chocofur shading nodes for creating our material library. For easier browsing, use the navigation bar in our store and then find corresponding shaders in the file browser in your chocofur account.

Blender 2.75a update release

The Blender 2.75a bug fix release addresses some urgent issues that popped in in the recently released Blender 2.75.

A couple of bug fixes were important enough to not leave in the 2.75 release, even though the next release is already expected in 5 weeks.
If you don't like boring bug fix logs, this is good to know at least:
  • Game Engine would crash for Objects using velocity clamping
  • Browsing render passes in Blender crashed.

Download the first Blender 2.75 Release Candidate now!

The first release candidate for Blender 2.75 has just been released. You know the drill - there are probably still bugs in it, so please test and report any issues you may find.

We are finishing work on a massive 2.75 release. The official Release Candidate is available now! Please help testing it and report issues to the bug tracker.
Among new features are AMD OpenCL rendering and stereo/multiview support!

Blender 2.73 Release Notes

The Blender Foundation and online developer community is proud to present Blender 2.73!

A major upgrade was given to the Grease Pencil tool, which inter alia brought the ability to edit and animate strokes. The first developments from the Gooseberry Project like a Sequencer Backdrop, Cycles viewport world background and others were added. Cycles got various improvements and speedups, as well as support for cameras inside volumes, the UI got a new 'minimalistic' fullscreenmode and Input Method Editor support for textbuttons (used for complex Chinese and Japanese character input), the Knife-tool was improved, Freestyle got a SVG exporter, and many more features which are worth checking out!

Cycles Rendering

  • Volume Rendering:
    • Rendering with cameras inside volume meshes is now supported
    • Cubic voxels interpolation is a new option helping to avoid artifacts on low resolution smoke simulations
    • Faster rendering of homogeneous volumes
  • Support for GeForce 9xx GPUs
  • Improved rendering with area lights
  • Viewport specularity for the viewport is now also implemented for Cycles

  • The 3D View got an option to display the world background right from the viewport
  • Pie Menus:
    • Confirm Threshold to confirm a pie menu without releasing the original key
    • Nested Pie Menus (a Pie Menu within a Pie Menu) are now supported

  • Chinese and Japanese complex character input:
    • General support for Input Method Editors (IMEs) has been added
    • Only supported for text buttons for now
    • Only supported on Windows and Linux for now
    • Supported is Sougou (Chinese), Bing (Chinese), QQ (Chinese) and Microsoft integrated (Japanese)
      And now guess why we have a Chinese Splash! ;)

    • New draw styles were added, e.g. filled stroke interiors, volumetric strokes, ...
    • The Grease Pencil's user interface (which is now completely defined via Python) has gotten a general overhaul
    • Two quick access pie menus were added
  • Graph Editor:
    • Revised the set of operators for showing/hiding curves from the keyframe area
    • Circle selection for Curves was added
  • And more!


  • Collada Importer:
    • Importing rigs previously caused problems with leaf bones (end bone of a bone chain) so a fix was created for that.
    • Added an experimental bonechain Finder to predict the longest possible chains of connected bones.
  • The FBX Add-on now uses some advanced handling/tweaking options for importing and exporting armatures
  • The Copy and Paste Add-on is now using version 2.0
To Add-on developers: Some changes were made to the Python API, make sure to check them out and update your Add-ons if necessary!

The Blender Foundation and online developer community is proud to present Blender 2.72a
Cycles GPU rendering supports Volume and Subsurface Scattering now. The User Interface comes with optional Pie Menus now and the Tooltips have been improved. For Modeling, a new intersection tool has been added in Edit Mode. Texture painting workflow has been streamlined with easy access to painted images and UV layers. The Compositor now comes with a Sun Beam node. Freestyle NPR rendering is now available with Cycles as well. Additionally, Blender 2.72a features three new addons.

Blender 2.66 released

Новое в этом релизе:
  • Динамическая топология в режиме скульпта. Этот режим подразделяет сетку при необходимости, что позволяет делать сложные формы без ручного добавления деталей к сетке;
  • Копирование и вставка объектов по ctrl+C/ctrl+V;
  • Bevel теперь можно применить и к вершинам;
  • Модификатор UV Warp - позволяет модифицировать UV-карты с помощью объектов или костей;
  • Модификаторы Laplacian Smooth Modifier и Shape Enhanced - позволяют снизить «шум» сетки, также с их помощью можно сделать объекты карикатурными;
  • Физический движок Bullet теперь работает не только в игровом движке, но и в основном редакторе и анимации, что даёт лучший контроль над результатом симуляции. Это позволяет также задействовать, например, Rigid body;
  • Один из последних и самых больших гвоздей в крышку гроба традиционного Blender Internal renderer - поддержка волос в Cycles renderer. Теперь толщина и форма волос задаются непосредственно в настройках системы частиц без необходимости создавать отдельный объект;
  • Другие возможности и исправления ошибок.
Традиционно программа доступна как для Linux, так и для Windows, Mac OS X и FreeBSD.
